The Espace François-Mitterrand is set in an oak forest overlooking the Bazois plain, on the footpath that runs around the Calvaire hill, just outside Château-Chinon in the Morvan Regional Nature Park.
The park is made up of allegorical symbols:
-A massive plantation of sixty-seven oak trees (a symbolic tree that he was particularly fond of) with the "oak of remembrance" in the centre, planted by Danielle Mitterrand.
-The Salle des Échanges, a crypt with a "laser", a metal sculpture symbolising the domination of mind over matter...
-A bronze bust of the President and his silhouette accompanied by his Labrador dog Baltique on the entrance gate.
-A dolmen symbolising the history of the Gallic Eduens of the region (whose capital was Bibracte). In 52 BC, during the Gallic War, the leader Vercingetorix allied his Arverne people, who had defeated Julius Caesar at the siege of Gergovia, with the Aedui at Bibracte to go and fight the Roman invaders at the siege of Alesia (the first historical outline of French national unity according to Mitterrand).
