You start your walk in the village of Montigny-en-Morvan. Like many villages in the Morvan, the oldest traces of civilisation date back to Gallo-Roman times. The name of the village comes from the Latin Mons ignitus "the mountain of fire" because its elevated position allowed fires to be lit there to serve as signals, conveying good and bad news. Before reaching the shores of the lake, you pass through the hamlet of Bonin. To the north of this hamlet, there is a small arena quarry. The arena (sand from the decomposition of granite) was used for a long time for the construction and plastering of houses,
the floors of outbuildings, as well as for roads.
These small quarries could be found in many of the Morvan's villages and hamlets. You are now walking along the Pannecière lake, in the shade of the oaks. From here, you have a magnificent view of the dam. With a length of 340 m and a height of 50 m, it holds back a lake of 520 hectares, the equivalent of 38 football fields. Once back at your starting point, don't hesitate to cross the dam on foot and go up to the belvedere to discover more about the largest lake in the Morvan and enjoy a beautiful view.
