Head towards the St Pierre fountain, where until the middle of the 20th century, processions took place to invoke the rain. A little further on, you will take the GR de Pays which goes around the Morvan. This 220 km long hike will take you to discover our granite massif through its peaks and along its large lakes. A challenge to put on your list of hikes to do.
For the time being, leave this GR and walk along the slopes of the Monts Paronciaux (574m) and Montamy (597m) to the monument of the Chaumard maquis. Here, in the early morning of 31 July 1944, the enemy army surrounded the camp and surprised the still sleeping maquis. The surprise effect is total, the maquis is destroyed and burnt. Twenty-two maquisards were killed, four were taken prisoner and deported. Marcel Lemaître and Alexandre Octave "Bauché", aged about twenty, had created this maquis a month earlier.
Continuing on your way, you will come to the hamlet of Pierre Sèche where there was an oil mill with a merry-go-round. The Morvan had many oil mills operated by a mill or by an animal-drawn carousel. Turnips (a variety of turnip) or nuts were usually crushed and processed for cooking oil and, in earlier times, for lighting.
