Your tour starts at the church of St Denis. The 16th century Renaissance building was remodelled in the 19th century. To reach the Bois des Fiottes, you will follow part of the GRP Tour du Morvan between Ouroux-en-Morvan and Moux-en-Morvan.
After about 3km, you will arrive at the memorial stele of the Fiottes maquis. In July 1943, the Resistance fighter Joseph Pelletier, co-founder of the Bernard maquis (Ouroux-en-Morvan) hid four refractory members of the S.T.O. (Service du Travail Obligatoire) in these woods. After a few moves in the surrounding woods, the maquis found this place on 14 February 1944. The next day, a team of collaborators managed to find the camp and killed the five Maquis.
You will also see Christmas tree plantations in the vicinity. Moux-en-Morvan was the cradle of this industry, which began around 1930. Today, the Morvan is the leading Christmas tree producing region in France, with 1⁄4 of the national production, i.e. about 1 million trees, for 1,500 hectares of plantations.
